The games really did tie one another up in a nice little bow, forming a single cohesive narrative that very few other series have ever really managed to come close to. The two games are really recognizable as high points in storytelling for the medium, and so in many senses it would be a shame if we never saw it again.

That said, a third game would have a difficult job finding exactly what it should be, whether that's an entirely original story, or one that draws on existing characters. It turns out that there are those within Rockstar themselves who have strong opinions on what the franchise should do next as well, and one in particular who thinks it should be left as a proverbial monument moving forward.

In his appearance on the , Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser shared his thoughts on Red Dead Redemption, saying, “Each of the [GTA] games was kind of a standalone story. It’s not quite the same [with Red Dead Redemption]. I think it probably would be, in some ways, sadder if someone continued on Red Dead, because it was a cohesive two-game arc. That might be more sad to hear someone working on that.”

Despite those thoughts, Houser did say that he believes that the company will start work on once is out of the way. The fact that he believes that a third game could damage the legacy of the first two is worth listening to though, given his high level involvement in both games.

Over on Reddit, one user the quotes and the responses were filled with interesting debate. "RDR1 was written without RDR2 in mind. The story is only cohesive because the story telling was so good in RDR2. With good writers they could definitely make a third game and make it fit with the overall story arc," one .

"They don’t tie GTAs together, not sure why they insist on linking RDRs together. Give us a whole new story instead, I’d say even earlier, maybe during the gold rush or something," another .

"Keep going backwards in time. Red Dead should cover all horse drawn eras. I don’t need a story tie in with the other two," a third .

Red Dead Redemption 2 Remains A Masterpiece

Whatever does happen with the next game, Red Dead Redemption 2 remains an absolute masterpiece, and one that we can keep returning to for years to come. Even if they did decide to do a direct sequel/prequel, the legacy of the first two titles is pretty locked in at this point, so we just have to trust Rockstar to do a good job when they do bring it back.
