is an institution. Created back in 1987, it's about to hit its 40th anniversary, which is an astounding milestone that very few developers (such as Nintendo) can celebrate. Given how consistent Final Fantasy is throughout its lifetime, who haven't played an RPG before.

Of course, there are tons of ways you can break down those recommendations. Final Fantasy 7 is a popular place to start, as is Final Fantasy 6. But there are a handful of even older entries that still hold up and are worth trying out. You just need to know where to look.

As revealed on the blog, a classic Final Fantasy game is now free. This one comes with very little in the way of caveats, and if you haven't played it before and are a big series fan, now might be the perfect time. Given how accessible it is and how impactful it was on future entries, it's a no-brainer.

As the sole game coming to Xbox Game Pass today, Final Fantasy 5 is now free for subscribers. It's being released on PC, Xbox Series X/S and cloud devices via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass, so it's fairly open-ended and easy to get.

Here's the quick rundown on Final Fantasy 5: "When the crystals that balance the world are threatened, the king hastens to the rescue…only to go missing. A young man and his Chocobo find themselves drawn toward friends that will change their destiny in this classic RPG."

It sounds simple enough, but Final Fantasy 5 is a fantastic entry that stands on its own. Released in 1992 on the Super Famicom in Japan, this classic JRPG wouldn't reach the West until 1998, when it was released on PlayStation. Since then, it's been fairly well-preserved on just about every current platform, thanks to the Pixel Remaster edition, which is dropping on Xbox Game Pass today.

If you're wondering how Final Fantasy 5 made its mark on the series, among many other facets and characters, it blows the job system wide open from previous entries.

If you've never played Final Fantasy 5 before, now might be a good time to join in and revisit a classic entry in this decades-long franchise. It's a fantastic JRPG in its own right, and given the freedom involved in the creation and tweaking of your party, it really does put the "RPG" in JRPG.

Final Fantasy fans owe it to themselves to try out this game as soon as possible. Thanks to Xbox Game Pass, it got a little easier.
