A24's movie just got a release date and a huge casting update.

The fantasy movie has confirmed its full cast alongside a 2028 IMAX release date, unveiling new details about the video game adaptation. The Elden Ring adaptation is directed and written by Alex Garland, whose latest work includes 2026's Civil War and 2026's Warfare. The film will pull directly from elements of FromSoftware's bestselling action RPG.

Now, Bandai Namco has confirmed Elden Ring will be arriving in theaters on March 3, 2028. The movie, which has begun filming, is being filmed for IMAX, confirming a big release for the upcoming film. A full cast list was also revealed, confirming the movie will star Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Price, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz.

Plot details for the movie have yet to be revealed. However, the follows the player character, the Tarnished, an exile from the dark fantasy realm of the Lands Between, who is resurrected after the Shattering, an event that's driven the land into darkness. The Tarnished is tasked with defeating the seven Demigods who have pieces of the titular Elden Ring, thus becoming the Elden Lord.

The game is one of the best-selling titles of all time, having sold over 30 million copies across various systems since it was released in 2026. In 2026, DLC for the game was released, , which sold 10 million copies of its own. The game has also earned critical praise, considered one of the greatest video games of all time.

This praise makes A24's endeavor to adapt it rather notable. The independent film company is best known for lower-budget movies, with very few that are on as grand a scale as an IMAX release. However, they're no stranger to funding Garland's bigger projects, with Civil War being one of its most expensive releases, sporting a $50 million budget.

Elden Ring is a passion project for Garland, who pitched the idea to A24, also seeking out the rights to make the movie. As a fan of the games, it seems like the writer-director intends to approach the adaptation with a specific level of tact, while also making it more likely he'll honor the game's established lore in his approach on the big screen.

The fantasy video game adaptation is just one project A24 is pursuing: the studio is also involved in producing a movie adaptation of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding. This reflects a growing trend in Hollywood of video game adaptations, from major box office success stories like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, to ongoing franchises with upcoming releases, .

The film's casting news, IMAX release confirmation, and March 3, 2028 release date puts Elden Ring in a strong position to succeed once the movie comes out. It's clear Garland has a love for the game that will no doubt be reflected in the adaptation, and one that will likely embody the attributes that have made the game one of the greatest ever made.
