The action hero is well known for playing the titular drifter and former U.S. Army military police officer in the Prime Video series Reacher, which will release its fourth season later this year. Last month, Ritchson starred in the , performing many of his own stunts while playing an Army Ranger candidate fighting an extraterrestrial killing machine. Now, Ritchson is returning to Netflix for a new survival series.

has announced that Alan Ritchson is leading its new survival competition series that will test the "resilience and grit of a group of high-profile influencers and headline-makers. With all the comforts and luxuries of modern-day life stripped away, the players will have to rely on their instincts, determination, and each other to outlast the competition and discover who they are without fame and followers."
The synopsis continues, "Do they have what it truly takes to endure? Will they risk losing their carefully curated personas in the process? And who will break first under the pressure?" Ritchson, an "avid survivalist" and "experienced outdoorsman" will "help guide the participants through the competition, pushing them beyond their limits and into the unknown."
Ritchson is also an executive producer alongside Jay Bienstock, who, known for launching series like Survivor and The Apprentice, also serves as showrunner. The series is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions, which is also behind reality competition shows like MTV's The Challenge, Hulu's Vanderpump Villa, and Lifetime's The Chrisleys: Back to Reality. They also previously produced the survival series I Survived Bear Grylls, which aired for one season on TBS.
This marks the first time the Reacher star will be leading an unscripted series, and comes more than two decades after season 3 in 2004 at 21 years old, singing Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life", which earned him a ticket to the Hollywood rounds. However, he was cut during that phase and did not make it to the top finalists.
