The mutant brawler has a permanent new codename in Marvel lore - one that redefines his place in mainstream Earth-616 continuity and beyond.
Introduced in 1974, Wolverine started out as an opponent to the Hulk before moving over to X-Men, becoming the team's resident killer. He's inarguably X-Men's biggest breakout character, with unique extended lore springing up around him encompassing hundreds of years.
Now, that lore has been taken to the next level, revealing that 'Wolverine' only begins to describe Logan's true place in Marvel lore.
Wolverine Is Earth-616's Savage Champion
In today's Wolverine #19 - from Saladin Ahmed, Martín Cóccolo, Jesus Aburtov and Cory Petit - Logan learns that he is Earth-616's incarnation of a multiversal archetype. The goddess Athena explains that in every reality of the multiverse, there is an individual who embodies man, beast and metal, known as the "Savage Champion."
This means that Wolverine's entire life has been steered at least partly by his multiversal destiny. It's also implied he's the only one who can - a sentient metal which is targeting all those merged with adamantium.
Wolverine Has a Permanent New Place in Marvel's Multiverse
Another interesting aspect of this reveal is that it may explain why several of Wolverine's villains hate him so much. Other 'feral' mutants like Sabretooth and Romulus have often targeted Logan for vague reasons relating to dominance and 'alpha' status. Now fans know that alpha status isn't just in their heads - it's the core of a multiverse-wide destiny.
in an attempt to bond with the Adamantine, becoming 'man, machine and metal.' Is this why the shadowy villain has been manipulating Wolverine's life over centuries?
Finally, Wolverine's status as the Savage Champion gives him a new connection to characters all across the multiverse. While he's always had variants like any other character, he's now also connected to the Savage Champions of other realities, even if they are drastically different. The 'Savage Champion' concept could be the linchpin of Wolverine's answer to Spider-Man's 'Spider-Verse.'
What Does This Mean for Wolverine's Future?
A final twist to this new idea of the 'Savage Champion' is that fans already know Wolverine is about to lose at least some of his adamantium. Solicit information for Wolverine #22 shows - something only possible if his adamantium has been removed.
However, the 'Savage Champion' lore just made 'metal' an essential part of the status. Does Wolverine lose the title if he loses his metal, and if so, who will inherit it? Given the title confers at least some unique qualities (such as making Logan the only one who can conquer Adamantine), Wolverine may soon find himself fighting off challengers for this new title.
Wolverine's new lore reveals he is the Savage Champion of Earth-616 - a heroic archetype that exists in every reality, combining humanity, bestiality and unbreakable metal. Wolverine now finds himself newly connected to a group of heroes that exist across the multiverse, surely setting up some significant stories in Marvel's future.
Wolverine #19 is available now from Marvel Comics.
