Given the explosive popularity of the franchise, it was no surprise when a fighting game adaptation, Invincible VS, was announced. While the new fighter retained some of the most iconic voice actors from Prime Video's Invincible animated series, such as J.K. Simmons and Gillian Jacobs, one name was noticeably absent: Invincible himself, Steven Yeun.
Luckily for fans, the legendary voice actor Aleks Le was tapped to step into Mark Grayson's bloody shoes. Le is truly an icon of the voice industry, having lent his considerable talents to anime such as Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and Dandadan, as well as video games like Street Fighter 6.
Though Le is most known for his stoic and , the actor has displayed range, such as with his more comedic turn as Demon Slayer's Zenitsu. It's this range that Le taps into for his performance as Invincible in VS, delivering a performance that hits with just as much impact and raw emotion as Yeun's performance does in the main Invincible series.
In an interview with ScreenRant to celebrate , Le revealed Yeun's response to his casting as Mark Grayson and shared a heartwarming story of being star-struck by the Academy Award-nominated actor.
Steven Yeun Gave His Blessing For Aleks Le's Role As Invincible
While Le didn't go into too much detail about Yeun's response to his casting, he did confirm that the star of Prime Video's hit series was happy with his video game counterpart. Perhaps more entertaining, however, is Le's anecdote of being at the same Invincible screening as Yeun.
"I was literally two feet in front of Steven at the Invincible screening for the last two episodes of season four. He was two feet behind me. And he knows about my work in the game. He actually had very positive things to say about it.
But I was just too shy and nervous to turn around and bother him — 'cause I was like, "Oh, I don't wanna rush him," 'cause I don't wanna be one of those people that come up and be like, "Oh my god, I love you. Can we take a picture?"
And everybody on the team was like, "You, above everybody, have the right to do that, though." And it was right as the story trailer with my voice was playing. He was watching it and talking to an Amazon rep about it, and I was like, "Oh, I wanna turn around and say hi so bad."
But I tried to be cordial, and I was just like, "All right, I won't do that. I'll just find another time where it won't feel like I'm a fanboy who's making him uncomfortable." I wanted his night to be undisturbed. I regretted it later 'cause I saw a couple of people rush to him and were like, "Can we get a picture?"
By all appearances, Yeun seems to be a fan of Le's performance in Invincible VS. Given that Yeun is no stranger to the world of voice acting, with key appearances in Voltron: Legendary Defender and The Legend of Korra in addition to his work on Invincible, it's possible that Yeun was already familiar with Le's vast body of work.
Regardless, the image of Le sitting in front of Yeun at an official event and debating whether he should say something is as humorous as it is relatable. Given Mark's incredible earnestness throughout Invincible, it's also perfectly in line with the character Le and Yeun both play.
Le's Performance As Invincible Is Truly An All-Time Great
In the wake of the , Le had a lot to live up to when taking on the role of Mark Grayson. While Yeun's performance captures the everyday, relatable nature of Mark, he truly shines during the numerous scenes where . The way Yeun's voice breaks is difficult to listen to in the best way possible, really selling viewers on Invincible's pain.
This is what makes it so remarkable that Le is able to match Yeun's performance. As Le spoke of in the interview, he isn't the type of actor to settle for a performance that was just good.
I remember one scene in particular at the very start of the story mode where Mark screams, and there's this voice crack when he yells the word "ever." And it's something that Mark did in the show when he was fighting against Angstrom. That specific voice crack can only be acquired and obtained if you actually break your voice at that moment.
So we did six takes of it already, and Meredith Layne, who was directing the story mode and also directs for the TV show, she was like, "Okay, sounds like you're pretty spent. Let's move on. I'm really happy with that. We got it." And I was like, "I'm not." And she says "What are you trying to do?" And I'm like, "There's a specific voice crack I have to hit," and she's like, "Okay, so you wanna blow your voice out like Steven does?" And I'm like, "Absolutely."
So we got it again, and I completely blew it out, and the crack happened at the exact same point. I was like, "Yes, we got it." And she's like, "Are you okay?"
Fans of Invincible can judge the results for themselves when playing Invincible VS, but it's easy to see that Le's hard work and dedication have paid off. His take on Invincible carries the same humanity, vulnerability, and grit that fans come to expect from the hero.
Both Aleks Le and Steven Yeun are once-in-a-generation talents who truly embody the best of their industry. As if there was any doubt, Invincible VS is another standout performance from Le, and it's great to see that recognized by big-name actors like Steven Yeun.
