revivals in the last few years, reuniting casts of classic TV shows and bringing a new story to the audience, but there are some shows that simply can't be revived after their end. While revivals can be some of the most rewarding experiences for long-time audiences, making them happen and ensuring they feel organic is tricky business. Cast members have to be willing and able to return, the story has to feel fresh and authentic, and the original chemistry may not be able to replicate itself after so much time has passed.
Despite the fact that there have been some successful revivals over the years, there are reasons that they don't get made for every great show. While some shows have lost cast members in the time since their series finale, others have told a story so complete that coming back to the characters could feel like a letdown. The medium often works better for sitcoms, like '90s sitcom returning as , than it does for dramas. Regardless of the reasons, revivals are tough to bring together, tougher to make work, and for some shows are a true impossibility.
10 Watchmen
HBO's , which was released in 2019, serves as the sequel to the original graphic novel, following detective Angela Abar (Regina King) as she uncovers a much larger, darker conspiracy about the world she lives in after investigating close-to-home murders. While , it's a show that seemed to leave the door open for more. Creator Damon Lindelof, however, has been firm about already having told the complete story he set out to. HBO has indicated they wouldn't create more Watchmen without Lindelof, which means any possible plans for revival are dead in the water.

9 Oz
, another HBO series with a ton of critical acclaim, ran for six seasons throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. Following the lives of inmates at Oswald State Correctional Facility (nicknamed Oz), the series portrayed a brutal sense of life inside the prison, and was best known for its talented ensemble cast, including J. K. Simmons and Harold Perrineau. While that some viewers would surely want to see more of, it could never be revived after its final season. With many characters meeting fatal ends, the series shut the door to a revival firmly.

8 The Good Place
NBC's , a sitcom from Mike Schur, was a massive success throughout its four season run in the late 2010s. Starring Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop, the series followed Eleanor and a small group of other recently deceased characters who think they're navigating a heavenly afterlife, but quickly find out that it was all a game. Full of complicated philosophical questions, that Schur was deliberate about. Choosing to close the book on the characters, The Good Place would have to do a lot of legwork to make a revival believable.

7 Mad Men
was one of the most successful shows of the late 2000s. The series came to a close after seven seasons of following Don Draper (Jon Hamm) through the twisted world of advertising in the 1960s. While the show could find itself bubbling back to the surface from a narrative perspective, the series has one of the most widely-agreed "good" endings to a TV show out there. Mad Men's historical setting makes it , and creator Matthew Weiner hasn't shown any indication of wanting to figure out how to continue the story.

6 Hannibal
Starring Hugh Dancy as FBI criminal profiler Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen as forensic psychologist/serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter, ran for three seasons on Fox. The chemistry between Dancy and Mikkelsen was dangerous and intense, making the show feel like a risqué series despite its gory, complicated roots. While for years, the show ended on a purposefully ambiguous note that many feel is a fitting conclusion for the characters. Beyond the narrative, Hannibal would need to recreate an electric sense of chemistry that may not come back too easily for the actors.

5 Six Feet Under
HBO's critically acclaimed follows a family that runs a funeral home. Running for five seasons in the early 2000s, the series is lauded as one of the most perfectly encapsulated TV shows of the decade, plainly showing what's to come for the characters during the series' final moments. that reviving the series with viewers knowing what the characters' fates are so definitively wouldn't make much sense. The show intentionally leaves no stone unturned, which means that reviving Six Feet Under in any way is an unnecessary move.

4 Lost
ABC's is one of the most talked-about TV shows in the modern era. Airing between 2004 and 2010, Lost had six seasons to tell the story of Oceanic Airlines flight 815, and it worked to ensure that the mystery infused into the series made things as blurry as possible throughout the show's run. While , it's the biggest reason that the series could never return. Despite Lost consistently getting more comfortable with character deaths throughout the series, the finale shifts towards each character's conclusion, bringing closure rather than leaving lingering questions.

3 The Wire
A highly acclaimed crime drama, aired for five seasons in the mid-2000s, and has long been one of the most praised portrayals of a realistic criminal ecosystem. While each season of The Wire is interconnected, the different facets of Baltimore portrayed on the show make each installment take on a new feel. Reviving The Wire isn't something that creator David Simon has been interested in the past, but further, looking at the show in a modern lens would be a far more difficult undertaking. The show's style wouldn't be sustainable, which means .
