season 8 finale's tragedy is threatening to stop Tim Bradford's proposal to Lucy Chen.
After opening with its ambitious Prague-set premiere, which finally gave John Nolan and Bailey Nune a proper honeymoon, the Alexi Hawley-created project is setting up another cause for celebration for Mid-Wilshire. Ever since Tim confirmed his plans of proposing to his girlfriend, the countdown as to when he will actually drop on one knee and pop the question has started. Unfortunately, it does seem like, instead of wedding bells, The Rookie will end the with a tragedy.
Tim and Lucy's season 8 story has been mostly positive. That doesn't mean, however, that the road to getting to where they are now has been easy. After a period of separation, on a cliffhanger, as they repaired their dynamic following their painful breakup. Luckily, instead of doing another round of will-they/won't-they scenario, Lucy and Tim officially rekindled their romance in The Rookie season 8 premiere, paving the way for them to also move in together.
Now, Tim is ready to propose to Lucy after securing the perfect ring, but The Rookie season 8, episode 18 trailer (via /YouTube) shows a prisoner transfer-gone-wrong that appears to put her life in danger. As a helicopter of bad guys ambush the Mid-Wilshire convoy, she finds herself standing in front of the villains as they get ready to shoot their firearms. Towards the end, Nolan can be heard saying, "officer down," hinting at Lucy's fate. Watch the clip below:
has been quite busy thus far. Notable villains like Liam Glasser and Monica Stevens have helped the show do more serialized storytelling, which means deeper narratives for those who have been following the show for a while now. Elsewhere, there have also been changes in Mid-Wilshire, with Tim getting promoted and Grey moving to a different task force. While there have been some pockets of happiness every week, it has been a while since the ABC procedural had something big to celebrate, and Tim and Lucy's engagement is the perfect opportunity for that.
Whether The Rookie is bold enough to kill Lucy at this point is unclear. Normally, main cast members of network procedurals are safe from permanent tragedies. This is why so many of them have become cult favorites and comfort shows despite dealing with crimes every week. That said, between 9-1-1 season 8 killing off Bobby Nash and Will Trent season 4 killing Amanda Wagner, it's difficult to be complacent.

The good thing is that The Rookie is already confirmed for season 9, which means that is guaranteed at least until next cycle. If Lucy lives, the show can spend time with the pair in this next chapter of their relationship, which means lighthearted plots that involves them planning their wedding. For now, the hope is that The Rookie season 8 ends on a happy note with the couple's engagement instead of a cliffhanger.
