Of all the characters who have appeared in the franchise over the years, few can claim to be as iconic or important as Luke Skywalker (and the Skywalker family more generally). Luke has appeared in six Star Wars movies as a fully fleshed character (as well as as an infant) and his impact on the overall story of those is enormous.
He also appeared in one of the coolest moments in , where those producing the show elected to use a de-aged version of original actor to bring the character to life. While he's obviously an icon, it's difficult to see how Hamill can be Luke forever, though the idea of replacing him with another actor feels uncomfortable.
Interestingly, there is one medium where he has already essentially been replaced, and it has to be said that it worked very well indeed.
Star Wars Already Showed Us Recasting Works
Over on Twitter/X, one user a clip of Luke Skywalker's appearance in the single-player campaign, where they made an interesting point that you might not have thought about before.
"I think this is the perfect case for recasting Luke. This doesn’t look or sound like Mark Hamill. But this *is* Luke Skywalker. The exact look or voice doesn’t matter as much as long as the actor embodies the character. It can be done," the post reads.
It's a genuinely interesting point to make, and one that does hold up to scrutiny, with the game offering a possible window into what future Luke Skywalker appearances could look like once Hamill is no longer able to do the role. The comments testified to the community's agreement that the developer did a great job here as well, and many were more than happy for it to be the blueprint moving forward.
"Say what you want about the game, they NAILED Luke’s personality and values. This felt like the truest interpretation of Luke after Return," one comment .
"Basically how I picture Luke post Jedi and into the Thrawn trilogy. Wish we got that in the sequel movies, or at least a Luke like this," another .
Another shared their belief that they already have the right actor in place to step in for Hamill, , "Max Lloyd-Jones already basically plays him in The Mandalorian — before they do all the unnecessary voice & face work — just let him act with his own face and voice."

Star Wars undoubtedly needs to make some big changes in its next run of releases, and moving Skywalker on to a different future could well be a great way to start that process.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Handled Its Story Well
As much as the multiplayer was a minefield of , it has to be said that Battlefront II did a really good job delivering its single-player story. It shows that video games can remain at the forefront of the franchise, alongside all the new releases that are coming up over the next few years, and there is a world where Star Wars has a genuinely bright future, with the right guidance from the top.
