Netflix's director Steven Caple Jr. teases several subtle Easter eggs in the series.

The seven-episode show is based on the 1980 Man on Fire novel by A.J. Quinnell, which was previously adapted as a 2004 movie starring and directed by Tony Scott. Washington played the former CIA agent and now mercenary John Creasy who goes on a quest for revenge. The role is played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the Netflix version.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan, Caple confirms that the Man on Fire series has a nod to Scott, but that viewers will most likely only catch it if they are fans of the director's work. He hints that there are other Easter eggs connected to the 2004 film as well and is grateful that they were not cut from the show during the editing process. Check out Caple's comments below:

I do have a nod to Tony Scott, but it's only if you're a Tony Scott fan that you would actually catch it in the scene. I will say that. Yeah, there are definitely nods that we got to keep throughout the edit that I'm excited about. So if you're a Tony Scott fan, let me know if you catch it.

As a television series coming from a different creative team than the movie, there will inevitably be many key differences from the 2004 version. At the same time, Caple's comments confirm that will still be paying homage to the film that preceded it. As Easter eggs, these connections will be present without taking too much attention away from the new adaptation.

Caple is an executive producer on the series and directs the first two episodes. His previous directing credits include the movies The Land, Creed II, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Man on Fire episodes 3 and 4 are directed by Vicente Amorim, episodes 5 and 6 are directed by Clare Kilner, and episode 7 is directed by Michael Cuesta. All episodes are written by Kyle Killen, who is also the showrunner and an executive producer.

Along with Washington, the cast of the Man on Fire movie included Dakota Fanning, Christopher Walken, Mickey Rourke, Radha Mitchell, Marc Anthony, and Giancarlo Giannini. In the Netflix adaptation, Bobby Cannavale plays Paul Rayburn, which was Walken's role in the film. The television cast also features Billie Boullet, Alice Braga, Scoot McNairy, Henry Tappan, and Paul Ben-Victor.
