If the most popular anime in history were to be compiled and ranked, it's likely that list would include . Action, romance, horror, and other genres largely unique to the medium, like battle shōnen and mecha, have all long been staples of the anime industry. However, over the last 15 years or so, one has skyrocketed in popularity, with far more titles airing each season than any of the other major genres.

Isekai, which roughly translates into 'different world', is a subgenre of fantasy in which one or more characters are transported to another world, usually facing challenges not present where they came from. Though isekai has been present in the anime sphere for decades, with powerhouse shows like Inuyasha making use of its tropes in the early 2000s, the genre took off in a big way during the mid-2010s.

Today, it wouldn't shock anyone if isekai accounted for 5 to 10 of the shows airing in a single season. However, a new report which collected viewership data from around the world revealed that isekai anime may not be as popular as fans might expect, considering .

, the GEM Partners Corporation's "Anime Global White Paper 2026" revealed the viewership habits of anime fans across 15 different countries, tracking the top genres, most-used streaming services, and growth in different regions around the world. Many of the findings were somewhat surprising, including Netflix's near dominance around the world as the number one anime streamer in seven out of nine countries. Most surprising, though, was the data collected on the top genres.

Isekai, , ranked within the top five in only two countries, Japan and South Korea. In its country of origin, it was the most watched genre. In South Korea, it placed second. In the United States and six other countries, including the U.K. and France, action/adventure took the top spot. Sci-fi, comedy, high fantasy, and horror rounded out the top five in miscellaneous order in most regions.

With just how frequent new isekai titles are produced, no one would be blamed for assuming the genre was dominant around the world. Even in the U.S. and U.K., where the genre failed to rank, the top isekai titles are undeniably popular with the masses. Unsurprisingly, it appears studios and creators are primarily targeting Japanese audiences with the abundance of isekai titles released yearly, though it's clear the rest of the world isn't quite as bought-in on the genre.

While isekai's failure to rank within the top five genres in North America will surely surprise some anime fans, few would have expected the genre to rank at number one as it did in Japan. In the West, battle shōnen has remained the most popular genre by a rather large margin for decades. in 2026, releasing the highest-grossing international film in U.S. box office history with Infinity Castle, while Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc landed itself in the top 40 highest grossing films of the year. It was the first time two anime films placed so high on the list.
