Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for The Pitt season 2!Dr. Mel King endured quite the emotional rollercoaster in season 2 and Taylor Dearden is eager for her character to get a break.
Dr. King was introduced in season 1 of the HBO Max medical drama as a second-year resident, and one of the most promising learning doctors in the eyes of Noah Wyle's Dr. Robby. Unbeknownst to most of her fellow residents, Mel also found herself balancing her approach to her work with being neurodivergent and being the primary caretaker for her autistic sister, Becca.
with Dr. King distracted during her day shift by her upcoming deposition in a medical malpractice suit, with the mother of the son diagnosed with measles in season 1 naming her and Ayesha Harris' Dr. Ellis in her suit against the hospital. To make matters more complicated is Becca's arrival in the ED, with Patrick Ball's Dr. Langdon diagnosing her with a urinary tract infection, leading Mel to learn she has a boyfriend and will not be spending 4th of July with her sister.
Everything came to a head in , "9:00 P.M.", in which Mel learns that the malpractice suit is still ongoing, and she will have to give another deposition at some point in the future. But, not everything proves tragic for Dr. King, as Langdon not only offers her some heartwarming comfort as she spends the holiday without her sister, but also gets invited to go out drinking with Isa Briones' Dr. Santos, shaking off the day's events by performing Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" at karaoke.
Ahead of the finale, ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed Taylor Dearden to discuss The Pitt season 2. The star broke down Mel's more emotional story this season, as well as how it provided her with a unique new acting challenge throughout production and her hopes for the character to get a break going into the show's future.
Dearden Had To Be Reminded Mel Was Having A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
While season 1 occasionally provided her with emotional beats, namely regarding her relationship with her sister, has certainly put Mel through the biggest wringer yet. She's not only found herself worrying if her career is in jeopardy due to the malpractice lawsuit, but also feels as though she's losing her family as Becca begins building what some would call a "normal" adult life.
Reflecting on playing the range of Mel's arc in The Pitt season 2, Dearden described the writing being both "good" and "really hard" to tap into, namely in that she had to reconfigure her approach to the character. Since season 1, she often found she was "having little moments that I would improvise" during shooting, finding them to "feel right in the moment as Mel," only for the season 2 directors and writers to remind her that "you're really anxious and sad all day."

While finding the experience rewarding to tap into a new side of her character, Dearden admitted that , she would like to see Mel given a less difficult time in her personal life when she's next seen:
Taylor Dearden: I think it was also just me trying to give Mel a break somehow of just like, "Oh, she needs something here." Yeah, a tough day for Mel. I think it kind of feels like the world's crashing down on her the whole day, and it does not get better. [Chuckles] It doesn't ease up at all and it just feels all too overwhelming.
