A recently released deleted scene for provides a tragic backstory for its main comic relief character, giving one of the most whimsical movie characters of 2026 a secret more somber side to their story. Goat is very much a lighthearted action comedy throughout its story, with the rise of Will and the Vineland Thorns being a classic sports rags-to-riches narrative of an unlikely group learning to work together.

That said, are in part because it leans into making all its main cast deal with some genuine challenges that will no doubt be familiar to many viewers. Will struggles with being looked down on because of his appearance and stature, Jett struggles with being called a has-been and with injuries from her career, and even many of the more comedically focused figures in the story have aspirations and failures that make them look reasonably three-dimensional and help the animated world seem alive.

Indeed, even one of the most otherwise silly characters in Goat's cast - and the one that tends to get the most laughs from audiences - appears to have a tragic part of their story. However, this moment is only delved into within a deleted scene from the , making it all the harder to know about, and all the more interesting all the same time.

Modo's Backstory Gets A Tragic Reveal In One Goat Deleted Scene

While the final cut of Goat delves very little into the history or inner machinations of Modo - other than addressing the obvious facts that he's a member of the Vineland Thorns, and arguably their most eccentric member - one deleted scene for the movie addresses the Komodo dragon's backstory in a way that suggests there are more serious dimensions to the character.

The deleted scene in question can be accessed as a digital extra for the movie, and features an extended version of the first Vineland Thorns match the movie shows after lead character Will Harris joins the team, delving a little more into the personalities of the group, and their various character flaws and conflicts.

One particular conflict arises over rhino Archie's twin daughters appearing in the locker room after the match, with Archie arguing he doesn't have an alternative but to keep them with him. In response, Modo remarks that Archie should simply do what Modo's father did with him, and keep them in an empty shark tank, since "that's what my dad did, and I turned out great."

Though it's a line that fits with the comic relief role Modo resides in for the entirety of the movie, it's one that definitely has a darker tone, given while the rules of the anthropomorphic world are notably different in many ways, the reactions of the characters around Modo do suggest this is still considered a pretty massively unhealthy way to parent children.

It also serves to potentially provide a different kind of explanation for some of Modo's behaviors, as the lizard being implied to have spent considerable time by himself and having grown up in a fraught environment would add a different context to why the character appears to care little for most of the social norms of the world he lives in, rather than this being solely a matter of his personality alone.

Why Modo's Backstory Didn't Make It Into Goat's Final Cut

The extended deleted version of the Goat scenes with the Vineland Thorns' first match is a fascinating one that adds more dimension to almost all of its central characters, but in a way that appears to explain why this version of events ultimately didn't make it to the final released version of the film - though the fact it was animated does appear to imply it was considered for the final cut for a considerable period of time.

Overall, the sequence doesn't add anything strictly necessary to the plot, and indeed may have made the overarching intention of the initial Will vs Jett conflict less clear to viewers, since the deleted scene sees Jett give more instructions to her teammates, whereas the final cut focuses instead on emphasizing Jett's flaw of trying to act as a one-panther team versus relying on her allies.

Given all of this, it's not strictly a surprise to note that these scenes were ultimately cut from the final version of the film, even if this only makes the sequence all the more interesting in retrospect. Following the positive reception to Goat, it's entirely possible Modo's backstory will be further followed up on in a sequel or show spinoff - though it's likely any future installments will focus more on paving the road ahead plot-wise for the central team and their stories.
