The following article contains MAJOR spoilers for Euphoria season 3, episode 3, "The Ballad of Paladin," as well as discussions of graphic, disturbing violence.

It wouldn't be if Nate and Cassie's wedding wasn't unhinged beyond belief. Thankfully, the third episode of , "The Ballad of Paladin," not only delivered but also restored the HBO series to its former glory — at least temporarily.

Euphoria season 3's five-year time jump, which sees the characters out of high school and trying to make their way in the world as young adults, was met with swift backlash. With a paltry 42% Rotten Tomatoes score, critics dinged the season for losing the edginess and voice that made the show special. suggests series creator Sam Levinson "may not have had a good grasp on [the characters] to begin with."

Some magic was definitely lost in separating , with Zendaya's drug-muling and stirring the most ire from audiences. However, episode 3 finally got the band back together as everyone reunites for the nuptials of the show's most obnoxious characters.

Emotions were heightened in every scene, whether it was Maddy's heartbreak at seeing her high school sweetheart marry her former best friend, or Jules and Cal's charged, complex reunion. Of course, most of the drama was from the bride and groom themselves.

Euphoria Season 3 Delivered Its Own Version Of The Red Wedding

Nate spared no expense in and presenting himself as the ultimate portrait of success. $50 thousand worth of flowers was just the beginning, as the ceremony took place at a lavish venue, champagne was overflowing, and guests enjoyed snacking on expensive caviar. However, what Cassie didn't know is that Nate is over half a million dollars in debt to his shady investor, Naz.

Naz shows up at the wedding uninvited, expressing displeasure at Nate's garish flaunting of wealth while still owing him money. In front of the wedding party, Naz threatens Nate before leaving, setting off a chain reaction of drama in his wake. The couple's friends, Fred and Heather, who invested their kids' college funds into Nate's business ventures, are spooked, while Cassie has a full-blown drunken meltdown at Nate ruining their wedding and failing to secure their future as her new husband.

Nate & Cassie's Euphoria Relationship Timeline

Season 1

Dating each other's best friends — Nate is in a volatile relationship with Maddy, and Cassie is with McKay.

Season 2

Dating each other's best friends — Nate is in a volatile relationship with Maddy, and Cassie is with McKay.

Season 3

Newly married and $500 thousand in debt thanks to Nate's shady business dealings.

As we've seen in Euphoria's past two seasons, however, Nate is an expert at getting himself out of sticky situations. He channels the power of BS to assuage Fred and is able to calm Cassie down in the limo ride home, convincing her he'll take care of everything and that they're still on their way to happily ever after. All things considered by Euphoria standards, the wedding was actually quite tame.

Not so fast. As Nate carries Cassie across the threshold of their marital home, they have one last wedding surprise waiting for them: Naz and a henchman. The henchman wastes no time in attacking Nate, violently shoving Cassie out of the way. She wails about her ruined day as her husband gets the living tar beaten out of him behind her in a scene as disturbing as it is darkly funny.

However, the sobering cherry on top comes at the end, when Naz hacks off Nate's pinky toe with a pair of pruning shears. For a series famous for its graphic scenes, this is by far the most violent Euphoria has ever gotten, and has drawn comparisons to Game of Thrones' notorious Red Wedding. It also may have just saved season 3.

Euphoria Season 3's Graphic Toe-Cutting Scene Officially Proves The Characters Are Out Of High School

The is that the series falls apart once the core group of teenagers leaves high school. Characters often seem like entirely different people, especially when there's a time-jump involved.

This has been Euphoria season 3's main problem, as it's not only changed the show's core setting but also its genres. As the protagonist, Rue Bennett's misadventures in the criminal underworld and more like a Western crime drama. Meanwhile, Cassie's OnlyFans storyline seemed to exist entirely to be provocative. However, episode 3's shocking toe-cutting scene finally correlates who the characters are now with their high school selves.

As a wealthy, attractive, white high school quarterback, Nate Jacobs is someone who always got what he wanted. Any obstacles, whether a romantic rival or consequences for his own actions, were easily dealt with. When Nate faced charges for assaulting Maddy to the point of leaving bruises on her neck, he orchestrated a scheme in which Tyler, an older fling of Maddy's, took the fall. Nate got off scot-free and continued his tyrannical reign over East Highland High School.

Now an adult, Nate wants a bigger version of what he had as a teenager. He wants to be the envy of everyone with his opulent mansion, beautiful wife, luxury cars, and piles of money. Rather than learn from his father on how to operate a lucrative business and build this life slowly, Nate did what he always does and skipped the line — he turned Cal into the police and took over the business without a clue how to run it.

The problem is that by being out in the real world, Nate is dealing with real-world problems and the consequences that come with them. The rude awakening of adulthood is something most viewers can relate to, whether it's the shock of your first credit card bill or getting a speeding ticket. Life is expensive and harsh, and it doesn't care that you're new to taking care of yourself and don't know the rules.

The toe-cutting scene takes this to extreme levels that only Euphoria can reach. Nate literally hasn't made it to adulthood in one piece. He's no longer cock of the walk; he's a lost 23-year-old with a pile of debt.

Euphoria season 3 releases weekly episodes on Sundays and is available to stream on HBO Max.

How Nate will claw his way back up to the good life is anyone's guess — it's a little hard to convince your blushing bride that things will be sunshine and rainbows while bleeding out of a hole where your pinky toe used to be. For as graphic as the scene is, it makes perfect sense for Nate's character, both in season 3 and who the audience has come to know. Ultimately, it makes Euphoria season 3 finally worth watching — even if you have to do it through your fingers.
