Class is back in session, as Netflix's sequel series to Bill Cosby's hit 39-year-old sitcom is officially releasing this fall.
Cosby is the creator and star of The Cosby Show (1984–1992), though he also created and guest-starred in the spin-off, (1987–1993), which follows students at Hillman College, a fictional historically black college in Virginia. After Cosby's legal issues delayed development, a sequel series to A Different World is officially in the works at Netflix.
Now, has confirmed that the A Different World sequel will be premiering sometime in the fall of this year. Alongside this announcement, the streaming service dropped the first poster for the series, which features Dwayne Wayne's flip-up sunglasses and simply says, "Welcome back to Hillman."
After The Cosby Show centered on the Huxtables, an upper-middle-class Black family in Brooklyn, the spinoff, A Different World, began by following at Hillman. However, following Bonet's exit in the first season, the series shifted focus to Southern belle Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and math whiz Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison).
Netflix's sequel series will return to and follow Deborah Wayne (played by Maleah Joi Moon), the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she starts her first year and "finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape as she sets out to build her own legacy, while having the time of her life, alongside a whole new generation of Hillman's best and brightest."
Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison will reprise their roles in the sequel series, along with Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell as , respectively. The sequel series will also introduce several new characters, including Alijah Kai (Everybody Hates Chris) as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche (One Of Us Is Lying) as Kojo, Cornell Young IV (Doing Life) as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall (The Idea of You) as Amir, and newcomer Kennedi Reece as Hazel.
Felicia Pride (Grey's Anatomy, Bel-Air), who serves as showrunner and executive producer, shared the following statement:
It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life. I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.
Debbie Allen (Fame, Grey's Anatomy), who produced 122 episodes and directed 83 episodes during the show's original run, is now returning as executive producer and will direct three episodes, including the premiere. She said:
There couldn’t be a better time than now to reboot A Different World. Our show changed lives, tripled the enrollment of historically black colleges and gave a strong voice and platform for Young Black America. The incredible fresh young talent we have discovered paired with the lovable audience favorite OGs makes this much-anticipated return a must-see on Netflix.
Though Bill Cosby is credited as the sole creator of A Different World, he won't be involved in Netflix's sequel series, which was reportedly stalled by his legal issues. in 2018 but only served three years in prison before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his conviction in 2026.
