is about to get even scarier.

The horror slasher franchise is officially returning with a new installment after a 17-year absence, confirmed for later this year. The follow Jason Voorhees, a vengeful, undead slasher villain who stalks and hunts campers at Camp Crystal Lake, with each movie broadening the scope and ideas of the previous films. However, the very first movie focused on his mother, Pamela Voorhees, who killed camp counselors as revenge for her son drowning when he was little. The latest film in the franchise was an attempted reboot released in 2009.

Now, Peacock has announced that the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake will be released on October 15. The series, which will see Linda Cardellini in the role of Pamela Voorhees, takes place prior to the events of the first movie, following the Voorhees family prior to the tragedy that befalls Jason at Camp Crystal Lake. The series also stars William Catlett as Levon Brooks, with no other details about the show released as of writing. However, it's received a fitting October release date, just in time for Halloween.

Produced by A24, the was announced in October 2026, with Bryan Fuller, best known for his work on Hannibal and American Gods, poised as showrunner. However, the series was delayed following the 2026 Hollywood strikes, and hit another snag when A24 fired Fuller in 2026. Brad Caleb Kane, co-showrunner of It: Welcome to Derry, replaced him, with the show filming from June 2026 to October 2026. It was also confirmed in April 2026 that the series was in the final stages of post-production, hinting a release date would arrive soon.

Additional main include Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks, Cameron Scoggins as Dorf, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace. However, just like Catlett's Levon, their roles in the series have yet to be revealed. Recurring characters will include Callum Vinson as a young Jason, followed by Nick Cordileone as Ralph, Joy Suprano as Rita, Danielle Kotch as Claudette, Christopher Denham as Theodore Landau, and Phoenix Parnevik as Barry. At present, it's unclear how the story will play out, nor the extent of each characters' roles.

So far, it seems like Crystal Lake will have its own dedicated story that pulls inspiration from the very first movie more than anything else. This is especially apparent with the focus on Pamela, alongside Jason still being a young child when the events of the series begin. Whether this will tie into the original timeline of films or rest in its own continuity remains unclear. However, the show will be presenting an origin story that will seemingly stay true to the intent of the films that came before it.
