Lionsgate just announced the cast and creators for Blumhouse's upcoming reboot of .
According to Lionsgate, Dylan Clark will direct the Blair Witch Project remake. He's also rewriting the screenplay after Chris Devlin wrote the first version of the script. Leading the cast are Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, both of whom starred in the original film.
Before now, Clark was best known for directing several short films, including The Pretty Thing, Seagrass, Behind the Frame, Portrait of God, Storytime and Catcher. Aside from directing the , Clark is also working on feature-length versions of Portrait of God and Storytime, with the former being produced by Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele.
After , Leonard went on to appear in other projects like Hatchet, The Shaggy Dog, Prom Night, If I Stay, Scorpion and Bates Motel. Meanwhile, Williams' other credits include Altered, The Objective and Satanic Hispanics.
Original filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick and Gregg Hale are on board as executive producers for the reboot, with James Wan, Jason Blum, Roy Lee, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Steven Schneider, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Alayna Glasthal, Scott O'Brien and Pavan Kalidindi all serving as producers as well.
After its theatrical release in 1999, the grossed $248 million at the box office and earned a Certified Fresh score of 86% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie centers on a group of student filmmakers who attempt to film a documentary in the Appalachian Mountains but end up going missing. Leonard and Williams' co-stars are Heather Donahue, Bob Griffin, Jim King, Sandra Sánchez, Ed Swanson, Patricia DeCou, Mark Mason and Susie Gooch.
The success of The Blair Witch Project led to an in 2000, though the sequel underwhelmed at the box office with $47 million and earned negative reviews from critics (and a 14% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes).
Another installment in the series, 2016's Blair Witch, grossed $45 million and received a 38% RT score.
The franchise has also branched out into books, comics, video games and even escape rooms (the Escape Blair Witch experience opened in Las Vegas in 2026), and inspired several studios to create their own found footage films.
A reboot of The Blair Witch Project was first reported in 2026, with Blum and Lee coming on board as producers two years later. Now multiple individuals from the , including Leonard, Williams, Sánchez, Myrick and Hale, are returning to the franchise almost three decades later.
As the project is still in early development, a release date for The Blair Witch Project has not been announced yet.
