Batman #9 ultimately sees Barbara Gordon make the ultimate sacrifice for the Bat-Family when it becomes clear that the GCPD has laid a trap that will result in Spoiler’s capture. With backup too far away to reach Stephanie in time, Barbara does the only thing she knows will draw the TUCO squad away from her teammates: she shuts off the communications scrambler she had been using to coordinate the Bat-Family.
This action reveals her location to , prompting the commissioner to order every unit to converge on the signal. At that moment, Barbara willingly sacrifices her own freedom to protect Stephanie. As Savage’s forces close in, Barbara sends out one final message to the team: “This has been your Oracle in the Clock Tower…We now conclude your broadcast day…It's been an honor and a privilege to serve with you, and I hope to see you all again soon. Until then, stay smart, stay safe...And stay in the dark. This is Barbara Gordon signing off.”
It is immediately after Barbara delivers this message over the team’s comms that the TUCO squads burst through the doors of the Clock Tower and arrest her. Oracle’s final words hit especially hard because, at that moment, it becomes clear that one of the most defining characters in Batman’s mythos is officially stepping away from the story.
For years, Oracle has served as the Bat-Family’s guardian angel, always in their ears and guiding them with seemingly limitless information. Her capture signals the end of that era, one in which Barbara Gordon was a constant presence behind the scenes, helping to keep Gotham’s heroes one step ahead.
While it may take some adjustment for readers to see Batman and even involved, longtime fans of the original Batgirl shouldn't worry too much. The end of this era also marks the start of a bold new beginning, as Barbara’s arrest serves as the catalyst for her upcoming brand-new series.

Launching May 13, Eisner Award-winning writer Mariko Tamaki and fan-favorite artist Amancay Nahuelpan’s will follow Barbara after she is shipped off to Supermax, “GCPD Commissioner Vandal Savage's pet-project prison for all who oppose him.” There, Barbara will find herself alone and “surrounded by dangerous criminals and equally dangerous guards, in a place where nothing is what it seems.”
Barbara Gordon entering her prison era already sounds like a recipe for complete and utter badassery. So, while it is tragic to see her leave the Bat-Family, this new series could very well end up defining Batgirl’s most iconic era yet.
